Europe is at a crucial turning point: without the immediate and comprehensive introduction of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT), the continent risks losing its competitiveness and sovereignty on a global scale. The current geopolitical situation and increasing cybersecurity threats make it essential to strengthen our digital infrastructures and intensify security measures.

According to a recent report, the EU is falling far short of its own digital connectivity targets 😵: fiber optic networks only reach 64% of households and high-quality 5G networks only cover 50% of the territory. However, these networks are essential to enable the next generation of technologies. It is essential that Member States and the Commission work together to create a functioning Digital Single Market instead of constantly developing new bureaucratic obstacles

Even more alarming is the fact that in 2023, the use of AI, cloud and big data by European companies remains extremely far below the target of 75%. Without targeted measures, only 17% of companies will use AI by 2030. There is an urgent need to motivate SMEs to use these digital tools and to mobilize investment in high-growth start-ups. This is the only way Europe can become competitive again in the field of data-driven innovation, efficiency and growth.

The digital transformation must put people at the center, as called for in the Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles. But here too, Europe is lagging behind: only 55.6% of the population have basic digital skills. To achieve the goals, Member States must pursue a multi-layered strategy that promotes digital skills at all levels of education and inspires young women in particular to pursue STEM subjects. Yes, despite AI, we will still urgently need these subjects.

The digitalization of public services is progressing, but the road to 100% digital public services by 2030 remains rocky. These goals can only be achieved through innovative solutions and decisive action.

506.ai is already at the forefront of tackling European bureaucracy with our AI solution and paving the way for a digital future. Let’s act together and make Europe a competitive, sovereign and resilient continent!
