The biggest impact of this change is the creation of an unlevel playing field. Reddit and Twitter’s decision to restrict the use of their API data means that developers who have just started training their models may not have the ability to sufficiently train their own language models. This could lead to market leaders such as OpenAI, Meta AI, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google continuing to massively increase their lead in developing new language models.

To ensure that developers from all regions have equal access to AI technologies, the EU must act quickly. One way would be to provide faster and more powerful infrastructures and datasets for research and development. These should be publicly available to ensure that no individuals or groups have a competitive advantage.

Another important step is to ensure that the future EU AI Act takes this particular situation into account and provides for appropriate regulation. The AI Act should ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed in accordance with the principles of fairness, transparency and accountability, while at the same time not causing serious harm to the EU itself.

Overall, it is important that we act more quickly so that AI technologies from Europe also have a chance in international competition. This is the only way we can ensure that AI unfolds its full potential while taking into account the needs of society.
